Katherine Elyse Media Celebrates 15 Years of Capturing Love Stories

We’re Turing 15!

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’ve been snapping pics for 15 years! I’m absolutely blown away thinking about this journey. From taking graduation photos of friends at @chicostate to capturing my first weddings to dedicating myself to the LGBTQIA+ community and now settling my business in Cincinnati, it has been one HELL of a ride.

Throughout May, I will be sharing a TON of old photos, stories, insights, fun facts, and doing an EPIC giveaway to celebrate this incredible occasion. (Stay tuned for FREE STUFF!) To every couple who’s trusted me to capture their bold, beautiful love stories, every client who’s stepped in front of my lens for portraits, and this amazing community that’s supported my vision – THANK YOU! 💕

Take a peek at some of my first photos vs. my current work in the slideshow below!

In the Beginning…

I remember the first time I picked up a film camera. It was 2008 and I was in college. My partner at the time had this great old 35mm film camera that I sort of co-opted. I was already shooting digital photos (take that with a grain of salt), but I was so curious about film. I did not know anything about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they worked together. I was operating on vibes alone, and somehow, I figured it out! I remember how ELATED I was when those first rolls of film came back. The photos were grainy and contrasted, and some were a little blurry (scroll along to see my work!), but I was in love with them. I think that’s when I really got hooked on the art of photography.

Everything I’ve learned since then has been self-taught or learned through experience. I had never taken a class or read a book about photography until very recently. If there was something I wanted to accomplish, I would look up that particular skill and learn it on my own. I figured out the exposure triangle through practice, not by looking it up, and it took me a REALLY long time to be able to explain how things worked inside my camera. (I’m embarrassed to admit how long I went not knowing that f-stop and aperture were the same thing. 😅 )

Thankfully, I’ve settled whatever ego trip prevented me from making the learning process easier for myself, and I am constantly looking to peers and industry leaders for inspiration and education. I’ve read a few books, dug down some rabbit holes, experimented more with film, and overall just leaned into the idea that I only really know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this art form. I’ve come a long way from that 20-year-old girl shooting from the hip (pun intended), and I’m incredibly grateful I’ve been able to maintain my love for the craft while making it my full-time gig.

Hopefully, I’ll be even better at it in 15 more years!
